The Shape of Time

The Shape of Time is a sensory installation by Errare Studio exploring ritual, memory, and embodied perception in response to the accelerating rhythms of contemporary life. Working across scent, textiles, sound, digital imagery, and sculptural materials, the exhibition creates a liminal environment between the digital and physical, asking how sensory experience might reconnect us to forms of presence and temporality increasingly obscured by digital life.

The installation unfolds across a landscape of altars and sculptural offerings. Clay and other earth-based materials are interwoven with scents drawn from the Southern California landscape, including orange blossom and pink jasmine. Moving through the space, fragrance becomes both an anchor and a navigational device: activating memory, shifting the perception of time, and drawing attention back toward the body and its surroundings.

Errare Studio is a multidisciplinary sensory spatial design practice led by artists and designers Se Young Au and Kaitlyn Darby. Au’s interdisciplinary practice centers scent and embodied experience, while Darby brings a background in spatial design and interior architecture. For The Shape of Time, they collaborate with creative technologist Mischa Kuma and sound designer Drew Sensue-Weinstein, extending the installation’s sensory environment through digital media and sound.
